ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is an ancient medical treatment originating
from China. It is just one of the disciplines
of traditional Chinese medicine. The earliest
writings are contained in the Huang Di Nei Jing
(Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic) which dates back
to the first century B.C. In this text, the human
body was described as a microcosmic reflection
of the macrocosmic universe. Medical efforts were
aimed at maintaining a harmonious balance between
the inner and outer environment.
Acupuncture was introduced to the West in 1972
by James Reston, a journalist for the New York
Times. He described how his postoperative pain
was relieved by 3 acupuncture needles following
an emergency surgery that occurred while in Beijing
reporting on a ping-pong tournament between the
Chinese and American teams. President Richard
Nixon's personal physician corroborated these
reports after witnessing several surgeries using
acupuncture analgesia during their trip to China
in 1972. Since then, acupuncture has steadily
gained in acceptance and is now considered a legitimate
medical treatment in the United States.
Acupuncture involves the painless placement of
tiny needles in acupuncture points that lay along
energy channels known as meridians. Each acupuncture
point has properties that when activated can influence
the body on both a physical and/or energetic level.
Acupuncture is used to effectively treat numerous
diseases and symptoms including fatigue, back
pain, muscle spasm, tendonitis, asthma, gastritis,
constipation, infertility, addiction and much
more.
