BOTOX®
    Botox® is purified, sterile botulinum toxin type A. The only manufacturer approved for use in the United States is Allergan. You can be sure that Dr. Dyer uses only the Allergan product. It is the only safe, FDA approved and legal product available.

WHY BOTOX® ?
    Quite simply, Botox® helps to lessen the strength of the muscles under the skin that cause wrinkles and creases. This is most effective across the forehead, between the brows, the outer edges of the eyebrows, around the eyes, the "bunny lines" across the nose, the chin, neck bands and the nasolabial folds that extend from the nose down past the edges of the mouth.

WHAT IS A TREATMENT LIKE?
    The muscles are injected using a very small needle. This is done while sitting up and the patient is advised not to lie down or bend forward, and not to touch or massage the injection site for the first few hours after the procedure. This is ensure that the Botox® stays right where it was injected and remains safe and most effective. Cold compresses can be applied to the injection areas to minimize any swelling or bruising that can occur.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A TREATMENT?
     Injection sites may swell minimally. There may a little bleeding at the injection site. Occasionally a bruise may result that can usually be covered with make-up. The treatment is easy and can be done with or without topical pain medication. After your appointment it is possible to go back to work or resume your usual activities.

     In order to decrease the chances of these side effects, patients are advised to avoid vitamin E, aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium and other medications that thin the blood and reduce clotting time. Dr. Dyer will personally review all precautions, risks and procedures with you to ensure your treatment is safe and effective.

WHEN WILL MY APPEARANCE IMPROVE?
    You will start to see the effects of the Botox® within 2 to 10 days. First you will notice your decreased ability to make certain facial expressions. Your face will appear more relaxed and youthful. Gradually the deep lines and creases will lessen or disappear. This will continue as long as you maintain the facial muscles in their weakened state.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
    Botox® is effective for about 3 to 6 months. You will slowly see the strength of your muscles returning. With repeated treatments, the muscles will remain weakened for a long period of time. None of the effects of the Botox® are permanent and if not maintained, your original muscle strength will return with its accompanying wrinkles.

WHAT ARE SOME COMPLICATIONS THAT CAN RESULT?
    All precautions are taken to ensure that all patients have a safe and pleasing experience with Dr. Dyer. Due to the temporary nature of Botox®, most side effects are temporary. Typical side effects include a mild headache, a feeling of heaviness across the forehead, burning or tearing. Nausea, asymmetry and a drooping eyelid have also been reported. This condition is temporary but may take up to 3 weeks or longer to resolve. Rare serious heart problems and serious allergic reactions have been reported.

ARE THERE PEOPLE WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE BOTOX® INJECTIONS?
    Yes. Women who are pregnant, nursing or trying to get pregnant may not undergo Botox® treatment. People who have neuromuscular diseases, such as myasthenia gravis, ALS or Lambert-Eaton Syndrome should not be treated with Botox® Anyone taking amino glycoside antibiotics, which include gentamicin, tobramycin, clindamycin and lincomycin should not have Botox® injections. People taking quinidine and medications to treat Alzheimer's disease must also avoid exposure to Botox®. These drugs and conditions tend to react with Botox® and cause negative effects.

WHAT ARE COMPLIMENTARY PROCEDURES TO BOTOX®?
    While Botox can help to reduce and eliminate wrinkles caused by some frequent facial expressions, not all areas of face can adequately be treated using Botox. Other products have been developed that work wonderfully to reduce the signs of aging and bring about a smoother, more youthful appearance. Fillers such as Restalyne®, can help to eliminate the folds around the nose and mouth, and give a sensual plumpness to the lips.
